Interns Leave HSP

By: Megan Sturomski, intern

Well it is sad to say but my time here at HSP has come to an end, along with fellow intern Glenn Schneider. We will both be graduating shortly and our 320 hours of internship experience have been completed. I am sad to be leaving HSP, but I am grateful for the experience. The thing that I will miss the most about HSP is the people, and all of the different stories that I was able to hear and be apart of. I was truly touched by the seniors as well as the children and their families. I will never forget what I learned here and I am forever grateful for the opportunity and what I have learned here at HSP.

A Special Thanks from Glenn:
"These few months have been a very rewarding experience for me. I've enjoyed working with Karole, Nikki, Sarah, Sheila and everyone else at HSP. Also the senior's and children's lives that I have impacted made this few months worth while, though I do not think that this will be the last time I step foot into HSP's door. Thank You!"

Arbor Day Tree at HSP!

By Andrea King, Intern

This Friday is National Arbor Day! In 1970, this day was dedicated to raise awareness about the importance of trees and to inspire Americans to plant trees around their homes, schools, churches or anywhere else they could think of. HSP is celebrating by planting our very own Skyline Locus right in front of our home office. Many warm thanks go out to all of the volunteers that have been helping us celebrate Arbor Day 2010.

The tree arrived today, April 28th

It is ready to be planted later this week!

HSP is in Need of Help!!!!!

By: Megan Sturomski, intern

HSP is urgent need of volunteers to help Saturday, May 8th for our annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, which is sponsored and performed by our local mail carriers. They will collect food from door to door and deliver it to their Post Offices. We are grateful to receive this food to help support our Feed the Kids which will serve 90 families(300 children) and Senior Citizen Project (serving 116 seniors each month). Volunteers at the post offices will load the food items and bring them to our center, and volunteers at our location will unload the vehicles and sort the non-perishable food.

This is a great project for students who need hours for NHS. Please let us know if you or your school may be interested in helping us. If so, please contact our facility at (630) 221-8340 or email at

Thank you so very much!!!

A Volunteer Celebrates Her Birthday With HSP!!!

By: Megan Sturomski, intern
HSP was so excited to have a group of volunteers come into the center today to wrap gifts for the Children's Birthday Project. But, what made the group extra special was the fact that the group was there celebrating a birthday of one of their own. Gina, who has been involved with HSP through the Secret Pal Program decided to spend her birthday doing good for others. We are so thankful that Gina and her friends decided to share the special day with everyone at HSP. We are also very grateful for the time and attention to detail that they put into wrapping gifts for CBP.

UPS Visits HSP!!!

By: Megan Sturomski, intern

Today we had an awesome group of people from UPS visit HSP to volunteer. These fantastic volunteers from UPS donated their time and energy to HSP, and we are so thankful! While they were here the volunteers helped to sort and box non-perishable food items for our Feed the Kids program, and they were able to complete a total of 43 boxes!! Feed the Kids is approaching rather quickly so the help that we received today was very much needed and appreciated. We hope to see you again, and we cannot thank you enough for your contribution to HSP!!

Spring has arrived!

By Andrea King, Intern

The trees are budding, the flowers are blooming, the grass is growing greener by the day and all of that can only mean one thing: spring has sprung! HSP would like to send our warmest thanks to the employees of Chuck Strayve Landscaping for donating the time, labor and resources it takes to keep our property looking fabulous. This thoughtful contribution welcomes guests to our center and makes our staff, volunteers and regular visitors feel more at home while they work hard to improve the lives of our impoverished clients. From all of us here at HSP, thanks Chuck!

Exciting Happenings at HSP!!!

By: Megan Sturomski, intern

There has been a lot going on at HSP lately, and we are pleased to announce that we have recently sent our very own Sarah Grindstaff, SCP coordinator, to speak to the Rotary Club of Addison about HSP and what we are all about. It was exciting to be able to inform other members of the community about HSP and what we do here. We hope to keep an ongoing relationship with the Rotary Club of Addison and all of its members.

Another exciting happening that has recently taken place at HSP is the fact that we have received an awesome donation of $4000 from Assurance Agency. We cannot thank Assurance Agency enough for this most generous donation! The donation that Assurance Agency made will go to help many needy children and seniors in HSP's programs, and we are so grateful.

On Thursday April 1st HSP welcomed staff and family members from the Eaglewood Resort and Spa in Itasca. HSP was so happy to have so many creative and willing volunteers to wrap gifts for HSP's Children's Birthday Project. The group did a great job and put so much care and effort into each gift that they wrapped. An Easter Bunny Visits HSP!!

By: Megan Sturomski, intern

An easter bunny has come to visit HSP and she goes by the name of Cindy Fabbri. Cindy is so creative and has brought many sweets to brighten the day of HSP's members. In the past Cindy has brought chocolate covered pretezels, Valentine's Day heart cookies, St. Patrick's Day clover cookies, and now Easter bunny cookies. We are so delighted to receive these sweet treats from Cindy, and welcome any other sweets that she would like to send our way. Everyone enjoyed the cookies so much that it was hard to get a picture of a complete bunny cookie. Thank you so much Cindy for all that you do for HSP and all of its members. You are awesome!

The only intact bunny left!!

Intern Chris Mills enjoys his bunny cookie!

Not only did HSP receive some awesome cookies, but the bunny also dropped off some great Easter baskets to give to the kids that visit HSP. We are so excited to be able to give out these great Easter treats!
