Girl Scout Troop 1157 Lends a Helping Hand!

Today, Humanitarian Service Project welcomed a vibrant group of girls from Girl Scout Troop 1157 through our doors to learn more about our various programs. The girls were eager to volunteer to sort non-perishables for our Feed the Kids program. Nineteen volunteers spent 3 hours learning and experiencing what goes on at HSP. We want to thank the troop and their leaders, Dawn and Kathy, for their interest in helping HSP in preparing 100 boxes of non-perishables for the Feed the Kids program.
Girl Scout Troop 1157, from LaGrange, was established 7 years ago. Dawn Aubert and her co-leader, Kathy, have been working with this troop for two years now. Dawn expressed, “We talked to the girls about what they wanted to do and they really wanted to help others in the community; about 75% of what we do is spent in service.” Dawn shared that they chose HSP because there are not organizations other than food pantries in their area, and they liked that HSP did more than one program. Dawn heard about HSP and the Children’s Birthday Project years ago and wanted to get involved with an organization that cares for the young and the elderly.
Troop 1157 has contributed to HSP through donated items in the past such as, last year the girls prepared items for the senior care kits. However, today was an exciting time for the troop as they worked firsthand in the warehouse sorting food for Feed the Kids. The Feed the Kids program was especially important to the troop because they have seen the amount of children at school who receive subsidized lunches. Troop 1157 had a desire to reach out to youth in need because they have witnessed some of their peers going through similar situations at their school. Dawn, Kathy, and the troop wanted to be able to help kids and families in need, and found that HSP’s Feed the Kids program was the right fit.

Everyone at HSP is thankful for the troop’s passion to reach out to the community and to help those in need. Troop 1157, we thank you for dedicating your time and donating food and personal care items to help the seniors we serve. We appreciate your service and willingness to learn more about HSP and the programs we have to offer! Volunteers are such a valuable part of HSP, if you or your organization is interested in volunteering to help serve families and seniors in need in the DuPage and Kane counties please contact us at (630)221-8340 or by email at hsp@humanitarianservice.org.
