Thanks to Our Food Sorters

Monday morning gets a bad rap. There are songs about it, sayings about it, and even movie quotes about it, “Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays.” But here at HSP we love Mondays! It’s not that we wouldn’t love to sleep in or have a little more time for our weekend errands, but Monday morning brings with it some of our most dedicated volunteers – our food sorters! They come in from 9:00 a.m. until about 11:30 or noon, and do just about everything there is to do in order to get the food and supplies ready for our monthly senior food delivery.

Among the Monday volunteers are Marilyn Kinney, Marilyn Sweeny, Bob Mancini, Jane (Janie) Corrigan, Rita Bezdicek, Mary Persinger, Mike Baumgartner, Deanna Cruzan (who brought her daughter, Sarah Hasheiter today), and Dan Bagger. They were quick to point out a few of the regulars who weren’t here today, so they could be recognized as well. Dawn Spiewak, Diane Breese, Sue Mancini, and Roland Imes have given many a Monday morning as well.

So we decided to ask these volunteers a little bit about why they like coming here and what it is that they do while they’re here. It wasn’t easy to get them to stop moving to answer questions, but after following them around the warehouse we were finally able to talk to everyone who came in this morning.

We’ll start with Marilyn Kinney. Shortly after retiring in 2006 she started looking for a volunteer position to keep her busy. She wanted something on a weekday and close to home, so when she came across HSP the fit was perfect and she’s been coming ever since.

Bob Mancini comes because he wants to help people, but he started helping out about 5 years ago when his wife, Sue, was taking a class at COD that required her to do some community service. She came to HSP and they’ve both been coming here since. Sue helps out in the office.

Mary Persinger is another long-time volunteer - she’s been coming for about 3 years. She used to work in senior services an do referrals to HSP, so she knew what a great program we have, and wanted to be a part of it. She also enjoys physically doing things with her hands.

Rita Bezdicek is starting her third year of volunteering and likes the consistent and regular hours that volunteering with HSP allows her.

Mike Baumgartner started volunteering with HSP about a year ago after his church, Willow Creek Community, became involved with HSP. Mike enjoys coming here and feels that Jesus wants him to be here helping out.

Jane Corrigan says that she comes because she has been lucky to live a fortunate life and wants to be able to help people who aren’t quite as fortunate. She’s been coming for just about a year and brings friends along with her sometimes.

Marilyn Sweeny volunteers with several organizations, but started helping out at HSP in November. She was the Director at World Relief for years and had worked with HSP while helping refugees and immigrants through World Relief. She really likes that HSP provides a direct service to families.

Dan Bagger started coming to volunteer a couple months ago and really likes to be able to serve the needy. He likes it so much he came almost daily during the Christmas holiday.

Lastly, Deanna Cruzan has also been coming since November and knows that there are a lot of hungry people who need to be fed. She thinks that should be the top priority and likes helping to be a part of that. Her daughter, Sarah, came today to help out so she could spend time with her mom, but also thought it would be a better thing to do than to stay in bed sleeping.

To all our volunteers, we give a great big THANK YOU! We appreciate your time and all you do for HSP and our seniors.
We couldn’t do it without you.

WOW!!!!

HSP had a Mother drop by today to pick up one of her children’s Birthday Boxes and what a surprise she gave HSP!!! We always ask our Mom’s and Dad’s to fill out a survey and provide us with feedback on how we at HSP might improve ourselves and our programs. And much to our amazement and happiness, this Mom told us she had absolutely no suggestions that could help us, because HSP has made her families’ Christmas and Birthdays so wonderful and put such wide smiles on her children’s faces that we are already doing an excellent job. This Mom does not think we could do any better, she said “how do you improve on excellence.” That made every minute we spend working for our families worth more than we can ever say! Thank you for that feedback, this fuels our energies, our hearts and our spirits to push ourselves even further in clip_image002this New Year!!!

Sponsor A Child!

Sponsor A Child!

When you think of a child’s birthday celebration, what do you think of? Do you think of party hats, cake, balloons, games, presents, and laughter? So do we! We want to make sure every child enrolled in the Children’s Birthday Project (CBP) has the kind of fun and lighthearted day that we all envision!

clip_image002Our commitment to helping 700 needy children, ages 3-12, in DuPage and Kane counties wouldn’t be possible without our wonderful and generous sponsors who have the same birthday wishes for those children. Did you know that it only costs $54 a year to sponsor a child and to ensure that he or she has a great birthday? By being enrolled in the CBP, that child will also be eligible for our Feed the Kids Project in the summer as well as The Christmas Offering, through which children receive Christmas gifts and food for the family!

clip_image004Each Birthday Box is valued between $220 and $260 and contains the following wrapped gifts with ribbon:

  • 6-15 New Toys
  • 1 New Game
  • 4 New Books
  • Party Supplies
  • Stuffed Animal or Action Figure
  • School Supplies
  • Filler Gifts

Our CBP Coordinator, Megan Birkey, came up with a great sponsorship idea over the Christmas holiday. While trying to find gifts for a few of the hard-to-shop-for people on her list she thought of the CBP and what a neat present it would be to give the gift of sponsorship! If you’re ever struggling for a gift idea for someone, whether for birthday, Christmas, or another occasion, why not sponsor a child in that person’s name?! How wonderful to share the gift of a child’s birthday. Great idea, Megan!

We are currently looking for sponsors, so if you are able to help a child or children, please let us know. We would love to hear from you!

Dick Adamo

Now that the hustle and bustle of the holidays is over we really want to take some time to let you know about some of our great volunteers and how much they do for us. Today we thought we’d tell you about Richard (Dick) Adamo.

Dick has been volunteering for us since the summer of 2005, after he retired. You might find him behind a desk fixing something on one of the computers, picking up food for us and delivering it to the warehouse for distribution, and on occasion he has filled in for the food delivery. Dick really is a Jack of all trades.

Before retirement, Dick had been working at Fermilab for 24 years as a Computer Professional. Previous to that he had done field service engineering and had retired from the Air Force after 4 years of Active Duty and 16 years in the Reserves. What an amazing guy!

Dick wanted to stay busy after he retired, and he had heard about HSP through a friend, Maureen Brennan, the Religious Education Coordinator at Saint John the Baptist Parish in Winfield. The Parish does a lot for HSP and Dick decided that he would too. He started out giving his desktop support talents to us, which he still does, but soon after he started helping out with whatever was needed. When asked what he likes most about volunteering, Dick said he likes “the feeling of community and how the spirit of helping rubs off” from volunteer to volunteer. He especially likes that HSP is a year-round program and feels that volunteering for HSP is a “worthy endeavor.”

We’re so glad Dick feels that way about us. We think he’s pretty great, too. For all you do for us and the families we serve, we say
thank you, Dick!!!

A Trip to the Roselle Public Library!

Thanks to two of our regular and wonderful volunteers, we now have a display case up in the Roselle Public Library. The display case will be up for the month of January and is intended to bring awareness to the Humanitarian Service Project and what we do.

Larry and Evelyn Erven primarily run our library of books for the Children’s Birthday Project, but they are always lending a hand wherever needed. When we asked them to head to the library to create the display case they were happy to go. When they weren’t completely satisfied with how it looked they came back for more supplies to “spruce it up.” They always put their all into every task they take on, and for that we thank them!

If you want to check out their work, and see what it is that we want the community to know about us, take a trip to the Roselle Public Library to see Larry and Evelyn’s fantastic display!
(Pictured to the right are Evelyn and Larry as they head out for their second trip to the Roselle Library to finish up the display case).
